WOW! Well that sure was an experience! I never imagined that a Daily Deviation would result in sooooooooooo many hits / downloads / adds on my grass brush page (and many of my other brushes and patterns too!)

Thankyou so much to FantasyStock who featured it  and Tetsuk0 who suggested it! And thankyou to all the people who are watching me and all the visitors to my page! I really appreciate your support! Thankyou!

PS6 BRUSHES - Grass by Ninja-Ryo <-- My DD!

Hi all.

I have been asked a few questions regarding stock use and would like to know what other people's opinions on the matter are.

Currently I offer my stock brushes under the terms that they are free to use within DA and by DA artists making their personal projects, however I prefer that they are not used on items that will later be sold for money, and I especially do not want them to be uploaded to other websites (by people other than me) for download elsewhere.

Here are my reasons why:

I feel that people who sell their art should really make it entirely themselves - afterall, they will make a profit from it, they will keep the profit for themselves without paying royalties to anyone, so surely they should be able to make their own artwork without needing to use things that other people made? Personally I would not feel right selling things that were not made by me, but that's just my opinion.

Also, I do not like the practice where 'outside' websites hijack stocks from DA and upload it on their own sites, offering the download from their own site and basically knocking the original artists out of the loop altogether. Sure they sometimes put the DA artist's user name, however they do not have an actual clickable link or the words 'artist-name.deviantart.com' anywhere so people finding the stock on the outside website really have no idea who the original artist was, or why this outside site has any reason to be hosting (without permission) the stock.

I had a look thru the rules of a number of stock providers and most of them have rules against using their stocks in the ways I mentioned above (so it's not just me thinking this way). I do, however, know that people will basically do as they please, with or without an artist's permission  and so no matter what rules I or anyone else puts on my / their work, some (not all, but some) people will just go ahead and use it in the ways I have ruled against anyway.

So what to do? Should stock providers just accept that once we put something online, it's basically not under our control anymore? I see a lot of picture artists on DA jumping up and down about art theft, however it seems not to extend to stocks (only picture art) - even when I find stocks belonging to myself or other DA artists, which have been uploaded elsewhere against the artist's rules, no amount of notes or messages to the offending website make any difference (I can still find numerous brushes of mine from a few years ago which are on pirate websites, I complained about them way back then, but obviously to no avail. The most blatant one I have found recently stole one of my current brush kits, cut off my branding and put their own branding on it! How rude is that!

So here are my thoughts:

I like making brushes etc as they are fun to make and give me a sense of satisfaction once they come out well.

I also like improving my own understanding of different parts of photoshop, and all the amazing things it can do.

I like providing brushes etc for DA artists to use in their own works as I feel it helps people - (many of those people later take an interest in making photoshop brushes etc themselves, so it helps them to learn I guess)

I like receiving links from people who use my brushes, so I can see what they made, however most of the time, users do not fave, link, or even credit stock providers (this is obvious if you compare the number of people who fave to the number who download. I previously had a brush kit which had around 14,000 downloads and only 500 or so faves!

And here are my options:

1. I will continue to create brushes, patterns, (and later, tutorials) and provide them for use on DA as I currently do.

2. I will swallow my pride and drop the rule about use of these stocks on things that will be sold. I only ask that the creator of the thing to be sold credits me (and other stock providers) with a clickable link to my DA account
eg: Ninja-Ryo.deviantart.com
This is a small thing to ask since they are using (and selling) something I made and spent time making, and they are using it for free although they will make a profit.

3. I still remain firm on the 'do not upload my stocks to other websites' rule, as it really is not fair to a stock provider to be kicked entirely out of the loop by having their stocks available for download from another site when they have not even agreed to that. Please do NOT do this. The stocks are for USE only, NOT for re-distribution by other websites or providers.

I want to make brushes and patterns that are useful to people, so if there is anything you think might make a good brush, let me know and I will see what I can do. Soon I will do some mini tutorials on how to enhance and use brushes (I have a 'hair' brush in the works which needs a tutorial as it is a bit more complicated to use than a basic 'stamp' brush).

OK that's enough for now. Sorry for my rant but it helped me to sort my mind out about this whole 'rules' bizzo. I guess I will go update my rules now!

Thanks from Ninja-Ryo

I have put my first few brush kits up now. I will be making more brush kits as time permits. Kits suit photoshop 6 and higher. Hopefully they are not too lame for general use.

According to brushes I need to put their group name on my journal before they approve my membership. So here it is.
